THE INCONSISTENCY OF ANTI-VACCINATION

by Sabri Lushi

As we all know, in the West, especially USA and Canada, there is a considerable portion of the population who are against vaccination, or at best show skepticism. As a result, within this part of the population, there are organized groups who actively refuse to get vaccinated and try to encourage others to do the same. Of course, this group almost can be identified with a certain political ideology – they are by and large conservative; many of them are active online; they have their own media and their advocates. In fact, whether you are pro or against vaccination has become almost a religious identification.

In any case, my point is not at all to say which group is right or wrong, or to criticize those who get vaccinated or those who refuse to get vaccinated. I personally am vaccinated. Apart from that, I am not a doctor or a scientist or a specialist to say one word regarding this issue. This is not a political issue; rather, it is a technical and professor matter which belongs to the professionals.

On the other hand, I can see some clear inconsistencies regarding the ideology or the behavior of those who refuse to get vaccinated and who clearly identify themselves as “anti-vaccination group”, and I hate to use the word “antivaxxer”.

The first inconsistency is that this group supposedly is afraid that vaccines are going to kills us, while there are so many other things in this world that are harming us much more seriously, but we don’t pay the same attention. “They are going to kills us”. Who are “they”? Millions of doctors around the world? If all these doctors and scientists – the smartest people – have agreed to kill us, then we are doomed. The antivaccination group cannot save us.

Second, I think this fear of “being killed” is really a typical selfish fear. The world population cannot be protected by spreading lies. Then, you and I are not “God” to show concern about the world’s population. We barely have the ability to even take care of our own families, let alone the world’s population.

Then, if you really care so much about the health of people: become a doctor, don’t use a car to pollute the environment, don’t spend too much – minimize waste. There are so many other things to contribute to the global population if you really care so much. All this group is doing is increasing chaos, distraction, fragmentation of the public opinion, spreading doubts and harming the social coherence.

In any case, this topic is relevant in USA and Canada, where everything gets politicized.
